For many Sonoma County residents, Memorial Day signals the “official” start of summer. Residents enjoy the many recreational opportunities available in Sonoma County including boating on Lake Sonoma, hiking in Armstrong Woods and enjoying one of the many beautiful beaches. And of course, residents and tourists alike enjoy summertime wine tasting events across the region.
MEMORIAL DAY HISTORY
However, Memorial Day is a uniquely American holiday to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military. Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May with observances held throughout the country. Originally known as Decoration Day, the celebration originated after the Civil War with citizens gathering in local cemeteries, holding family picnics or participating in local parades.
